Tuvalu is one of the smallest and most remote countries on Earth. Located in the vast Pacific Ocean, it can barely be seen on most maps. The country is facing the very real danger of disappearing beneath the waves. Not an Atlantis myth but the reality of this century. Plans for evacuation are being made right now. Tuvalu is on course to become one of the first nations made uninhabitable by rising seas, making the Tuvaluans the first complete nation of climate refugees. Forced from their home islands, they risk losing not only land, but culture, language, and identity.
Juriaan Booij’s project The Sinking of Tuvalu spans a photographic series, a book, and the documentary film King Tide. Together, they offer an intimate portrait of Tuvaluan life — and a clear-eyed view of the surreal, unsettling ways the future is arriving.
